Upon waking up this morning, we learned that GM (Genetically Modified) Mustard had been given expedited approval. Even though it had been scientifically ready and available since 2007, when it was finally released, some people are calling it a revolutionary decision. The BT Brinjal was similarly doomed, and the BT cotton crop was unable to double its output despite initial projections to the contrary.
Others in the scientific community, however, see this as a failure of our regulatory system that could threaten India’s bio-safety and -security. The main point of this discussion has been:
The main point of this discussion has been:
1. The GM mustard is a low-yielding mustard, while there are many other varieties and methods that can provide a higher yield.
2. Problems with the studies: the applicant conducted their own research (no independent testing was performed), and the biosafety dossier has not been made public despite repeated requests from the Court and the Chief Information Commission over the course of several years (this is what led to identification of flaws in Bt brinjal).
3. Problems with the studies: the applicant conducted their own research (no independent testing was performed), and the biosafety dossier has not been made public despite repeated requests from the Court and the Chief Information Commission over the course of several years (this is what led to identification of flaws in Bt brinjal).
4. A number of necessary examinations were not performed at all! Some information has surfaced indicating that genetically modified and non-GM varieties differ in a number of ways, including biochemical parameters, weight gain, and compositional analyses.
5. Contradicts PM’s online trail with @narendramodi @nstomar@AgriGoI, which advocates for organic and natural farming.
6. There is a lack of research on the effect of mustard oil’s use in ayurveda, an area where the practise is widely practised. and
Several state governments, including those of Rajasthan, Haryana, and MP (three of the most important mustard-growing states), had already decided against adopting GM mustard.
7. Though some misinformed or confused individuals may call it a success, the widespread failure of Bt cotton is evidence to be learned from.
8. There is currently no liability regime in place through which future affected parties can seek redress for harms they have suffered. There are claims that the future of humanity is at stake, despite evidence to the contrary, such as the fact that mustard requires less water and input than other crops and that its price has doubled in the past three years.
